City Guides Alexandria

"Alexandria is one of my favorite cities - my best friend Hend and I like to take what we call "the pilgrimage" there once a year. We drive from Cairo or take a short train ride, stay at the Cecil Hotel (my grandparents honeymooned there), visit of our favorite restaurants, and look for Gohar (Old) World finds in antique shops."

FOR AUTHENTIC ALEXANDRIA
CAP D'OR

Cap d'Or is a modest, authentic bar at the heart of Alexandria. Stepping into the bar transports you back in time: opened over a hundred years ago by Greek residents, Cap d'Or maintains its historic charm with preserved Art Nouveau interiors dating back to 1909.

The bar has 13 tables, each with a red-and-white tablecloth, and a cool, marble bar long enough for about six to sit comfortably side by side. It is loved and revered by locals for serving ice-cold Stellas, the most popular Egyptian beer - not to be confused with the Belgian beer! - and perfectly-fried calamari. Don't forget to try their seafood appetizers, or mezze, cooked in traditional Alexandria fashion.

FOR THE BEST EGYPTIAN BREAKFAST

MOHAMED AHMED

Situated in an otherwise unassuming street in downtown Alexandria, Mohamed Ahmed is respected throughout Egypt as one of the best - if not the best - restaurant for a traditional Egyptian breakfast. Built over 100 years ago,

Mohamed Ahmed serves simple staples well and has established themselves as an Alexandrian institution.

They are well-known for their falafel, always made fresh and with just the right amount of spice, and classic Egyptian fare. We recommend the shakshuka, moussaka'a, shami hummus, and classic Egyptian pickles, or torshi.

FOR INTIMATE ITALIAN FARE
CHEZ GABY

Chez Gaby is a simple, brick and wood-clad eatery that serves classic Italian fare including pasta, pizza, and salad. It has been an Alexandrian staple for the last 44 years, with an intimate atmosphere that takes diners back to the city's golden days.

The restaurant's pizza is their stand-out dish - both locals and visitors rave over the margarita pizza that Chez Gaby has perfected over the years. We personally love the lasagna, aubergine with red sauce, and the fava bean tapas. End your meal with a lush tiramisu or a chilled glass of red wine.

FOR A LOOK BACK IN TIME
TRIANON

Trianon transports you back in time. At this historic cafe in downtown Alexandria, you'll find a grand piano, marble columns, art deco murals, and servers dressed in traditional all-black uniforms. On weekends, live pianists and oud players perform songs from 50 years ago, replicating the experience of dining in 1905 Alexandria.

The cafe serves fresh pastries, desserts, and drinks - pair your meal with an espresso from their coffee bar. Arrive in the early afternoon and seat yourselves outdoors for a perfect view of the sunset.

FOR SEASIDE SNACKING
WHITE AND BLUE RESTAURANT

The White and Blue Restaurant, more commonly known as "The Greek Club" to locals, serves Greek and Mediterranean seafood at the best beach-side spot in the city. Grab a table outside for stunning views across the bay towards the corniche.

Food highlights include the clams - a must-have with an ice-cold beer! - the grilled octopus, and the smoked prawns. The hummus and other mezze dishes are also fresh and full of flavor; A great seaside meal to accompany light drinks at sunset.

The Greek Club is always worth the walk to the end of Alexandria.
