Cairo Part 1

City Guides Cairo Part 1

Nadia shares her favorite spots from her and Laila's hometown: Cairo.

One of our longest (and most important!) lists so far, we've decided to split up the Cairo guide into two parts. Part 1 features a restaurant on the Nile, a classic Egyptian breakfast, historic sweet treats, and more.

FOR DINNER AND A SHOW

LE PACHA 1901

This glamorous restaurant floating on the Nile was born from a dream in 1901.

A Pacha (high-ranking officer) passed away in the midst of fulfilling his fantasy of creating a riverboat palace. Almost a full century later, in 1992, a traveler fell in love with the ruins of the partially sunken boat and decided to revive the vision. Since then, Le Pacha has turned into a multi-cuisine gastronomic experience. Nadia's favorite is "Le Steak", serving French bistro food with a beautiful view of the Nile.

FOR A GREAT HAPPY HOUR

Located in downtown Cairo, Carol is a great dive bar to grab a drink and Mezze.

Come for their happy hour and enjoy a selection of beers, cocktails and wine. In traditional fashion, smoking is allowed inside the bar so asthmatics, beware.

FOR AN ICE COLD BEER

GREEK CLUB

When they first opened their doors in 1906, Greek Club was veritably a Greeks-only spot to gather, drink and eat. Since opening to the public in the 1950's, it's become a hub for artists, academics and young activists. If you're in the Downtown area and in need of something refreshing, grab an ice cold beer or refreshing mint lemonade and a Greek salad on their open-air terrace.

FOR AN ELEGANT TREAT

GROPPI GARDEN

If you're looking for a dessert with a bit more of an ambiance, Groppi Garden is an elegant tea room that has been serving chocolates, ice cream, pastries, coffee, and more for over 100 years. Originally created by Swiss chocolatier Giacomo Groppi, the staff has maintained the grandeur of the garden and the authenticity of the recipes. Ask any Cairo native and they will have a childhood story about their fresh early-morning croissants or afternoon ice cream scoops.
