City Guides Mexico City

For this week's guide, we have special guest Rafael Prieto sharing his restaurant selects in Mexico City. Rafael is an artist, designer, and long-time Gohar World friend and collaborator. All Gohar World chocolate bars were created at his chocolate company, Casa Bosques Chocolate, located in Mexico City.

A CLASSIC MARKET IN MEXICO
MERCADO SAN JUAN

"Mercado San Juan is a great Mexican market that serves the freshest seafood.

It is possibly one of the only places in the city where ceviche is served with olive oil, which I personally prefer.

I have a couple of favorite spots on the right side of the entrance. Get the blue corn taco with langostino a la diabla, ceviche sierra, and the tuna crudo. Don't mind the scorpions for sale - I still haven't met anyone who actually eats them."

AN EPHEMERAL POP-UP
MERCADO SOBRE RUEDAS CONDESA

"Another mercado because why not?

Especially an ephemeral one like Mercado Sobre Ruedas Condesa.

This market only pops up on Tuesdays, on the same street as the well-known restaurant Lardo. The front entrance in the middle of the market has four ladies preparing very delicious homemade style food - red mole and black beans are my favorite, but the salpicon is also very special."

A 90'S BREAKFAST NOOK
KLEIN'S POLANCO (KLEIN'S)

"A real classic restaurant for a cozy and proper breakfast.

Klein's serves eggs, muffin, vegetables, deep-roasted coffee - a 90s-type breakfast - with very quaint service.

People come from all over: business executives, a nanny on-duty, ladies gossiping, gentlemen gossiping. It's classic Polanco."

A FAMILY-OWNED SPANISH CANTINA
BAR EL SELLA

"This traditional Spanish cantina is a major lunch restaurant, and as classic as Mexico City can be.

I love the energy of the space. Bar El Sella is a family-owned restaurant, effortlessly cool in decor, filled with family portraits, and then - bam! You'll notice that the entire family is there. They make you feel at home, and let you eat as we would say,

"sabroso". Get a michelada, get a mezcal. Don't overthink it, but maybe over do it - this is your perfect Friday plan."

BONUS: AN ARTIST'S HOME

PENSIÓN CASA BOSOUES

"Pension is a three-room guest house. It is intimate and individually furnished with objects and artwork made by my design studio Savvy, along with artists who have stayed at the house. Pensión is situated above the quiet charm of the Casa Bosques bookstore and the soothing hum of the chocolate atelier. Each room embraces the unique architectural features of the former single-family home, including a Juliet window overlooking the quiet, tropical street below, the views into the sunlight-filled courtyard, and an en-suite garden patio."
